All TSC employed teachers in kenya receive various allowances apart from the basic salary they pocket monthly.
The various types of the allowances paid to teachers by TSC include;Medical allowance (that is not paid directly to the teacher but deducted and submitted to AON minet insurance and another to the National Health Insurance Fund NHIf), house allowance, commuter allowance,leave allowance and hardship allowance.
This article focuses on lucrative house allowances for teachers stationed in schools that are mapped under municipality (large towns and cities) in every job group.
The TSC house allowances as per the location of teaching station and job group are slightly different. For instance , teachers teaching in urban areas (cities) where cost of living is assumed to be too high, receive more house allowances as compared to those teaching in rural areas. Furthemore, teachers working in same municipality but under different job groups equally earn different amounts of house allowance.
The Commission has further divided municipality areas into 3 (three categories). They include:-
1.Capital city (Nairobi)
2.Major cities (Mombasa ,Kisumu and Nakuru)
3.Other major towns (Eldoret, Trans-Nzoia, Kiambu, Makueni, Kilifi, Nyeri, Kisii, Machakos ,Kitui, Narok, Embu, Meru e.t.c)
Teachers working in Nairobi area get the highest allowances than those executing their mandate in areas classified as major municipalities and other municipalities.
The major municipalities comprise of Mombasa, Nakuru and kisumu.TSC employed teachers from these regions in a higher job group equally enjoy a bigger allowance than those in lower job groups.
This therefore means that the allowances of teachers in municipalities are paid based on ranks / job responsibilities and the regions they are stationed.
