Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has declared Monday, October 10, as a public holiday.
Through a statement dated Friday, October 7, Matiang’i noted that day will be set to mark Utamaduni Day.
“It is hereby notified that Monday, October 10, 2022, will be a public holiday (Utamaduni Day).”
“All citizens are reminded to honour the day by recognising and celebrating the rich cultural diversity of Kenya in a manner that promotes our unity, national cohesion, and economic progress,” the outgoing Interior CS stated.
He cited Sections 2 (1) and 4 and Part One of the Schedule of Public Holidays Act (Cap 110) as the basis for his declarationThe date was declared a holiday in a ruling issued by the High Court on November 6, 2017.
In the ruling, Justice George Odunga observed that scrapping Moi Day as a national public day was unlawful, which paved the way for it to be renamed.
The day was set to celebrate the country’s rich cultural diversity. Previously it was celebrated to honour the late President Daniel Moi
