In what is turning out to be a major political blow to DP William Ruto, more than 700 professionals from Elgeyo Marakwet County have endorsed Azimio leader Raila Odinga for president.
Elgeyo Marakwet is a region perceived to be Ruto’s political bastion.
The announcement was made at a meeting of the professionals from the Keiyo and Marakwet communities in Eldoret.
They stated that they thought only Odinga could assist in resolving issues in the area, particularly banditry in Kerio Valley.
Additionally, they supported Alex Tolgos, the governor of Elgeyo Marakwet, who is running against sitting senator Kipchumba Murkomen for the regional Senate seat. Tolgos is vying on a Jubilee ticket.
Dr. John Kibosia, a former CEO of the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, served as their patron and led the professionals and important political figures from the area.
“We know Odinga has demonstrated his commitment and love for this country and his choice of Martha Karua as a running mate makes them the safe hands for the leadership of this county,” said Dr Kibosia.
Elgeyo Marakwet is thought to be DP Ruto’s stronghold, but the professionals’ action is expected to upend politics in the county where Governor Tolgos is serving out his tenure.
The leaders in attendance praised Tolgos, calling him a brave, gutsy, and visionary leader who had changed the county throughout his administration.
The professionals and leaders present included Deputy Speaker of the Senate Professor Margaret Kamar, CAS Linah Kilimo, and former Marakwet West MP Boaz Kaino among others.
