Details have emerged of Kenyan Members of Parliament who lack the required educational qualifications, raising concerns about the election Act, which is set to take effect this year.
According to information revealed on Friday by the People Daily, several present Members of Parliament only have the Kenya Certificate of Secondary School Education (KCSE) exam.
Bahati constituency member of Parliament Honourable Kimani Ngunjiri, who has merely a KCSE Certificate from Michinda high school, is among those who have not gone to post-secondary education.
Honourable Jayne Kihara, his Naivasha constituency equivalent, merely has a certificate from an institute and so no diploma.
Some of the Members of Parliament are currently pursuing their degrees and are yet to graduate from the Universities where they are studying and thru include George Aladwa and Starehe Constituency Member of Parliament Honourable Charles Kanyi alias Jaguar
The total number of Members of Parliament without degrees is estimated at around 40 of them and the who list is as below. Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa, Jude Jomo (Kiambu Town), Junet Mohamed (Suna East), Abdulswamad, Imran Okoth (Kibra), Oscar Sudi (Kapseret), Kimani Ngunjiri (Bahati), Jayne Kihara (Naivasha) and Samuel Arama (Nakuru Town West).
Others include George Theuri (Embakasi West), Aladwa, George Sunkuiya (Kajiado West), Ndirangu Waihenya (Roysambu) and Stephen Mule (Matungulu).
This comes at a time when the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has already stated that in the upcoming presidential elections, all candidates must have at least a bachelor’s degree.
Senator Kipchumba Murkomen of Elgeyo Marakwet has previously proposed a reform to the law to remove the clause requiring Members of Parliament to have degrees.
