Wiper Democratic Movement party leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka and Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula are among those in the race for position of Speaker of the National Assembly.
Kalonzo and Wetangula completed the nomination forms on Monday, September 5.
Kalonzo’s bid for the seat comes on the backdrop of presidential electoral loss by Azimio La Umoja’s Raila Odinga, whose candidature he backed. Kalonzo had been promised the seat of ‘Chief Minister’ in the event Azimio trounced its main challenger -Kenya Kwanza’s William Ruto- in the August 9 plebiscite.
On his part, Wetangula, who was re-elected as Senator, enjoys the backing of Kenya Kwanza and is a presumed frontrunner in the Speaker race.
Besides the Speaker seat, there is also a vacant position for Deputy Speaker. Others who have shown interest in the two positions are Dr. Noah Winja, Jared Olouch Oundo, Isaac Alouch Polo, Farah Maalim (former Deputy Speaker and MP-elect for Dadaab constituency in Garissa), and Gichugu MP Robert Githinji.
The deadline for collecting nomination papers is Wednesday, September 7, at 12.30pm.
