KNBS Releases A Report On The Highest And Lowest Paid Workers In Kenya

The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics(KNBS) has released a report indicating the highest paying jobs both in the public and private sectors in the country.

In the 2022 Economic Economic survey report released on Thursday, May 5, it was revealed that Kenyans working in international Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) were the top earners in 2021 – taking home an average of Ksh3,757,013 per year – which translates to Ksh313,084 per month.

Other top earners in the private sector were employees in the financial and insurance sector (Ksh173,505 monthly), electricity, gas, and air conditioning supply (Ksh173,103 monthly), transport, and storage (Ksh128,010 per month) while scientific and technical employees took home a monthly pay of Ksh123,222.

On the other hand, government employees in the accommodation and food industries were the top earners with an annual average salary of Ksh2,476,497 which translates to Ksh206,374 per month.

Government workers in the health sector, who include doctors and nurses, earned an average of Ksh155,377 per month while state corporation employees took a monthly average salary of Ksh107,623.

Employees in government-run manufacturing companies earned Ksh86,821 monthly while county government workers took home an average of Ksh72,301 per month.

Workers in various ministries earned Ksh61,993 per month while teachers took home an average salary of Ksh61,843 per month.

Officers in public administration such as police and army officers earned an average monthly salary of Ksh56,041.

The lowest earners in the private sector were workers in the Water supply/ sewerage, and waste management earning Ksh24,574 per month.

In the public sector, Kenyans in agriculture, forestry, and fishing were the lowest earners taking home an average monthly salary of Ksh42,924.

Despite the numerous economic challenges faced in 2021, KNBS noted that there was an increase in salaries for both employees in the public and private sectors with an increase of over two per cent.

In the year under review, overall annual earnings increased by 2.3 per cent to Ksh 827,400 compared to a 3.1 per cent increase registered in 2020. This translates to an average monthly earning of Ksh 68,953.4

The average annual earnings in the private sector increased by 2.2 per cent to Ksh 829,200 in 2021 compared with an increase of 2.4 per cent to Ksh823,600 in the public sector, over the same period,” read the report.
