The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has disputed claims that ballot papers in Tharaka Nithi county were destroyed.
Chairman Wafula Chebukati said during a press conference at the Bomas of Kenya that what was damaged were polling booths for Tuesday’s general election.
“That’s not true,” Chebukati said in response to a question from members of the media on what restorative measures the commission had taken to ensure voting would not be affected following the incident.
“What was destroyed were a few booths by some people who attacked the car, and those are materials we have in abundance, so we will replace them,” Chebukati affirmed.
He stated that the process of replacing the material was already underway.
The IEBC CEO stated that ballot papers are escorted under heavy security to reduce the possibility of them being destroyed while in transit.
“Those are all safe, with the exception of the examples stated in our presser,” he said.
