180 party members in Nyaribari Chache in Kisii county switched to ODM, dealing Deputy President William Ruto’s UDA party a setback.
The youth, women, and MCA hopefuls who have defected have backed ODM MP candidate James Kenani and committed to support coalition party Azimio la Umoja One Kenya.
“I’m really excited about the fact that they have joined us ditching their own party that they have been supporting and by extension the parliamentary candidate,” Kenani said.
He claimed that because the defectors will now support the ODM candidates in Azimio, the change of allegiance will have an impact on not only the MP seat but also the MCA positions.
The group said they resorted to defect to ODM owing to Kenani’s development record and will to help the underprivileged.
“We saw the positive things he did when he was CDF chairman and we don’t see anything that will prohibit him from continuing with the same spirit,” a group representative said.
Kenani will face among others UDA candidate Zaheer Jhanda at the August 9 polls.
