A section of lawmakers affiliated with Azimio la Umoja trolled President William Ruto following reports that Mt Kenya members of Parliament defied an agreement they ratified at State House, Nairobi.
Mt Kenya MPs went against an agreement reached on Wednesday, November 16, on the final list of nominees selected to join the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).
According to the final results announced on Thursday, November 17, Mwangi Maina defeated Fred Muteti, who was fronted for the EALA seat after the State House meeting. Mwangi was left out of the initial list.
The Mt Kenya MPs overwhelmingly voted for Mwangi, who garnered 213 votes, joining the list of five legislators from Kenya Kwanza side heading to EALA.
Others who were on the final list, which was shared widely by Digital Strategist Dennis Itumbi, sailed through in the National Assembly voting.
They included Hassan Omar, former Nandi woman representative, Zipporah Kering, former nominated MP, David Sankok, and Falhada Dekow Iman.
Muteti, the former Secretary General of the now defunct United Republican Party (URP), previously led by President Ruto, lost in the National Assembly despite garnering 39 votes in the Senate.
Following the voting by MPs, a section of Azimio la Umoja legislators warned Ruto of imminent betrayal by Mt Kenya lawmakers.
Led by Sabati MP Caleb Amisi, they cautioned that Mt Kenya MPs would turn their backs on Ruto while alluding to their fallout with former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“Mt Kenya doesn’t condone oppression. From colonialism, they opposed white supremacy.
“If they defied their own son Uhuru Kenyatta, William Ruto be worried ,the volcano will soon erupt with an avalanche of hot lava, followed by big bang theory,” Amisi stated while tagging Mwangi, who had won the EALA race.
“So the State House democracy has been defeated in the EALA election?” Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai questioned.
Nation Africa columnist Gabriel Oguda also commented on the issue stating that Mt Kenya MPs had decided to make their own resolution by settling on Mwangi instead of Muteti.
However, Mt Kenya MPs have not issued a statement following the election of Mwangi to EALA.
During the voting, the Azimio side settled on Kennedy Kalonzo, Winnie Odinga, Suleiman Shahbal and Kanini Kega.
The nine individuals are expected to serve in EALA for five years.
